Senior Backend Engineer: Reporting to the Lead Engineer, the Senior Backend Engineer owns significant areas of DUPR's server-side platform and acts as a technical leader for our B2B integration work. This role combines deep hands-on engineering with cross-team leadership: architecting and building Kotlin/Spring Boot services, making decisions across our data layer, designing event-driven workflows on AWS, and partnering with external integrators on complex B2B integrations. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of professional backend experience, strong JVM expertise, and a track record of shipping production systems while raising the bar for engineering quality around them. What You'll Own in Your First 6 Months: Take ownership of one or more major backend systems and establish yourself as the technical lead for them. Drive at least one meaningful architectural improvement or new system design end-to-end. Become a primary technical point of contact for our most strategic B2B partners, including making integration design decisions and unblocking complex partner work. Accountabilities: Back-End Development: Architect, build, and maintain Kotlin/Spring Boot services that power DUPR's platform. Own end-to-end design of event-driven workflows on AWS SQS, and set the standard for performance and reliability across our backend systems. Database & Data Layer: Make schema and data-architecture decisions across PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis. Lead Liquibase migration design and review for changes that affect production data. Cloud Infrastructure: Design and operate production AWS systems across SQS, S3, EventBridge, and RDS. Drive deployment, observability, and operational practices. B2B Partner Integrations: Lead the technical side of complex B2B partner integrations end-to-end. Diagnose and resolve high-stakes integration issues, own technical documentation and integration guides, and design internal tooling that scales partner support. Technical Leadership: Set technical direction in your areas, drive architecture and design discussions, and raise the engineering bar through code review, design review, and mentorship of more junior engineers. Code Quality and Performance: Lead efforts to improve performance, scalability, and maintainability of our backend, identifying systemic issues and driving them to resolution. Debugging and Troubleshooting: Lead diagnosis of complex production issues, working from symptoms to root cause and ensuring durable fixes — including process improvements when warranted. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with front-end, product, and partner-facing teams to make sound technical decisions that serve both engineering quality and business outcomes.
